Poems of 1983.

Cassius - Oh Cassius Clay
I saw you on T.V. today
Your feet were lead
Your wits were gone
Although your legend
Lingers on.
Eyes that once darted
Here and there,
Were fixed in empty
Barren stare.
And my heart cried
With shame and pity
For the man we knew
As Mohammed Ali.

Dear Terry (Scott)

Thank you so much for stopping my ‘leak’
Without you I surely would be up the creek!
You claim the village plumber you’ll never be -
But you’ll always be the village idiot to me!!

Desolate..deverstated..desperate...depressed.
No - not quite depressed - but surely all the rest.

Elated joys - and deepest depths -
I feel them all with no regrets.
For without first the taste of tears
We can’t appreciate the peace.

GERRY

Thank you, my dear, for being a do good
And being so cheerful as only you could
For coming in early and showing restraint
As you heard of my ailments and many complaints.
For showing an interest when I was real down
And doing my shopping without even a frown.
And now that I’m over my dose of the flu
And not quite so miserable and not quite so blue
I’d like to say ‘thank you’ for seeing me through
And in appreciation I’ll give it to you.

Jim - KENT COUNTY SHOW

The man with the birds
  And the soft gentle words
And the beard streaked with white
    At the Kent County Show

And the man with grey eyes
  Who was painfully nice
But the man with the WIFE
    At the Kent County Show.

Then the girl with the lace
  And the ambitious face
With the stand next to Jim
    At the Kent County Show

But beware her poor heart
  Which could fall apart
If she shared it with him
    At the Kent County Show

And her secrets untold
  Her heart locked up cold
Which she can’t give to him
    At the Kent County Show.

Nine O’Clock News

The jumbo jet in clear blue sky
Then gone from sound and radio eye
It blindly flew in Russian air space
Then disappeared without a trace
Almost 300 folks on flight
But now, Dear god, their gone from sight.
Humanity gasps - the world is stunned
But God forgive those in command.

Sitting in my fireside chair
My cup of tea in hand
Waiting to witness history
In television wonderland.

Good morning 'my telli'
I got up special just to see
You debut with breakfast T.V.
Another first for B.B.C.

Steves first girlfriend

The doorbell rang, I answered it,
And there this couple stood.
He bought her home to meet me
I never thought he would.

We sat together, sipping tea
And chatted for a while
And all the time I fought the urge
To break into a smile

And when he left to take her home
The house seemed strangeley cold
Though honoured that he brought her home
It made me feel so old!!

Sue Morley

Suzy’s birthday caused quite a scandal
And was too much for poor Eddie to handle
It was all he could take
As he bought in the cake
Then collapsed with the weight of the candles

The depths of despair on a Saturday night
Everythings wrong - and nothing is right
The poilice station that beconed to me
Is far away in distant Chelsea.
Shoplifting from Harrods was Stephens crime
But at least he did it in style this time!
And they can't let him go until I get there
Saturday night and in the depths of despair.

TO MIKE KEEMAN

The neighbour who, only last week, passed my door
Has departed this life and will pass no more

(My heart feels for Chris, Joanna and Stu.
But most of all, Mike, my heart feels for you.)

TOM + GERRY’S ANNIVERSARY

Well, my friends, your special day is here
And ten long years have passed
Since the day that you finally decided to wed
And made it all legal at last!

And if we some up the last ten years
I wonder what story they’d tell:
Terry saying “You should have thought of that”
With Gerry, “Didn’t I do well!”

The dulcet tones of Nana Maskouri
And Jack Jones smooth sexy voice
Were not who you crooned to ten years ago
It was twist and rock to the latest beat noise.

Who would have guessed, ten years after the church
That Gerry would be married to the ironing board -
And no-one could imagine on the day you were wed
Terry’d take the sting from his sword!

So what, if those ten years have taken their toll
And your waistlines have increased slightly
I know a good exercise to overcome that
And it’s best if it’s practised twice nightly!!

Now here I go - being crude again
And I promised myself that I wouldn’t
(But with things as they are - and me on my own
If I wanted to I certainly couldn’t)

But even if the years have been anxious at times
Remember, we all have our ups and downs
And you’ve three lovely kids to show for your toil
And a marriage that seems pretty sound.

So congratulations to you both
You’ve sailed through the first ten with ease
Your foundation is solid - go forward as one
And with each other face the forthcoming year.

Tonight I saw a fairy
Resting on my door
It really wasn't very large -
An inch or so, no more.

It's trim and tiny body
Was a pastel apple green
With feelers curling from it's head -
The fairest crown I've seen

It wore a shimmering mantle
Its beuty never wains
Fine transparent gossamer wings
Marbled with torquoise veins

It truly was a picture
Not encountered every day
Until, with grace of moonlight breeze
It softly flew away.

At 1.30 am I answered the phone……
Silence - then click - and the dialling tone!!

July 6th

A family disaster,
A courtroom drama,
Stephen alone in the dock;
Mother sat fearful,
Tried not to be tearful,
But a fine was all that he got!

Quite how he made it,
We can't yet explain it,
But lucky he certainly was.
And now we just pray
That he'll find the righ way,
And make use of the chance that he got.

Back to main menu ay,
And make use of the chance that he got.
